Women Need More Sleep Than Men According To New Research

Finally! Research has shown that women need more sleep than men because their brains are more “complex”.

1. Get ready for bed, ladies.

Jim Horne, one of the professors of the England’s Loughborough University, reveals that women are multi-taskers, meaning that they need higher amounts of brain tasks and use more regions of the brain than men need, resulting more sleeping hours.

2. 8 hours? Not necessarily…

While we now know that the 8-hour-every-night-model is not ideal for everybody, most people need to get around 7 hours to function normally.

3. So, what’s the difference?

Jim Horne reveals that women are multi-taskers, meaning that they need higher amounts of brain tasks and use more areas of the brain than men need, resulting more sleeping hours. Jim Horne explains that “For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger.” “These feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”

4. The average is 20 minutes more.

The research found that women need around 20 minutes more sleep than men every night.

5. What about the tired men?

It is said that a man has a mentally demanding job that requires lots of lateral thinking task and decision making, will need more sleep than the average make. However, the sleep hours are still not as much as a woman.

6. This may seem like good news, however…

While it may seem like good news, the speed and efficiency of the women brain comes at a cost. The study shows that it is more vulnerable to damage than the male brain. If damaged, the male brain can recover more quickly and completely. So the daily recovery and repair process is extremely important for a woman.
