One57 is one of New York’smost iconic and mythical buildings. In 2014, a One57 penthouse was sold for a record breaking $100.5 million making it the first – and so far, only – apartment to surpass the $100 million mark, in New York City. And the mysterious buyer was none other than the mega-wealthy founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, Michael Dell.
The glitzy One57 is a luxury 90-story skyscraper that rises 1,004 feet above 157 West 57th Street. The Park Hyatt hotel occupies the first 39 floors, and the rest of the space is split into 95 condos. Designed by Christian de Portzamparc, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, the glass-walled One57 looks like a cascading waterfall.
The building itself is home to a slew of billionaires as well as several celebrities. For privacy reasons, only some of the buyers are known, including billionaires Michael Dell, Lawrence S. Stroll, Silas K. F. Chou, and Andrey Dubinsky, the head of BDO Unicon Group.
One57 residents are welcomed to their home via their own private entrance with its own lobby and elevator bank, so they don’t have to mingle with the guests at Park Hyatt on the lower floors.
The residents have access to in-room spa services, in-room dining and catering, cleaning services, and even dog-walking services. They can also enjoy an exclusive health club, multilingual hotel staff, plus an indoor swimming pool that’s three floors high and overlooks Carnegie Hall. Not bad, right?
The penthouse Dell purchased is a 10,923-square-foot duplex occupying the entire 89th and 90th floors and includes 6 bedrooms. Each bedroom has 23-foot floor-to-ceiling windows and provides unparalleled views of New York.
There are also 7 bathrooms and 2 powder rooms, as well as a steam room and marble baths.
The bigger kitchens have two of everything, including double dishwashers and double stoves. There’s also a built-in Miele coffee maker.
The most impressive part is perhaps the view of Central Park – waking up to this amazing view every day may be worth $100 million.
Dell’s penthouse is not the only unit with spectacular views. The other apartments in this building also have floor-to-ceiling windows and unimpeded views. And these ceilings are also quite tall, with the lowest ceiling measuring 10 feet 7 inches.
One57 has various units, ranging from one bedroom homes to six-bedroom penthouses.
Another model unit is a three-bedroom home on the 58th floor, and it really shows what a three-bedroom home should look like.
In total, this three-bedroom unit has six rooms and over 4,000 square feet of living space.
The so-called grand salon runs the length of the apartment and has nearly 12-foot-tall ceilings.
The huge dining-room can fit a dining table for 10 guests and also has plenty of space for art.
If proof were needed, the glitzy One57 is a prime example of New York’s soaring luxury real-estate market. The building’s average price per square foot for 2015 was $6,010, while 2014’s most expensive, 15 Central Park West, came in at only $5,726. Dell paid close to $9,000 per square foot for the penthouse.
The property tax breaks of One57 is a cool $65.6 million, which could help build 370 affordable apartments in the Bronx.
