Dogs are more than pets, they’re our family members and loyal friends. They love their master unconditionally. So when this six-year-old boy was told that his best friend was nearing the end, his response was touching.
The family noticed their dog, Belker was not that playful as usual. They decided to visit the veterinarian for regular check-up.
The doctor examined Belker thoroughly and diagnosed Belker with dreadful cancer. He told the family he couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
Shane’s parents struggled and finally accepted the doctor’s advice. They wanted their little boy to face the coming death of his best friend and learn something from that.
On Belker’s last day, Shane stayed calm and petted his dog whilst saying his last goodbye. Within minutes, Belker peacefully slipped away.
After Belker’s death, the family all sat together and wondered why animal’s lives are shorter than humans. Shane, who had been listening quietly, spoke “I know why…People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life, love everybody all the time and to be nice, right?” He continued, “Well, dogs don’t have to stay as long because they already know how to do that.”
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is never easy. Hopefully, Shane’s words bring us great comfort and inspire us to cherish each moment we have with our family and companions.
