1. The Shawshank Redemption

The year of 1994 is by many ways a magical year in the history movie. The Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and Leon, The PRofessional all came to the big screen this year, and all ranked among top 30 movies of all time on IMDb. Although losing to Forrest Gump in Oscar, Shawshank Redemption is still the No.1 on the IMDb top list. The story is about Andy Dufresne’s 19-year spent in prison. 2. Rocky

Although Rocky is a film shot over 40 years ago, it is still inspiring audiences nowadays. The movie is about Rocky Balboa, an uneducated but kind-hearted Italian-American boxer who worked as a debt collector and got a shot at the world heavyweight championship. With the high development of professional sports, it is almost impossible for a nobody to become a sports star but you can still find this story in Rocky. 3. 127 Hours

What will you do if you had to cut off your hand to survive? This is the question in the film 127 hours and this is what Aron Ralston is facing during hiking at the Blue John Canyon in the film. As the name indicates, Ralston spent 127 hours alone, being isolated after knocking a boulder. The 127 hours made him rethink his life choice. The film was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards and nine British Academy Film Award. It also received six nominations in 83rd Oscar Award.

4. Into the Wild (2007)

Into the Wild told the story of Christopher McCandless’s experience in the Alaskan wilderness in the early 2990s during his journey across North America. Being isolated in the wilderness in Alaska made him think about his life choices. In the end, he found out that happiness can only be found when shared with others. However, he failed to escape from the wilderness. This movie received two Oscar nominations and one Golden Globe nomination.

5. It’s a Wonderful Life

There are often great movies and great music during Christmas time and It’s a Wonderful Life might be the first movie among them. In the movie, George Bailey who contemplates suicide and his guardian angel shows him all the lives he has touched and how life could be if he had not ever been born. In the end, George abandoned his suicide plan. This is also true in our lives that a single word you said or a single action you made might help others’ lives!

6. Freedom Writers 

In Freedom Writers, Erin Gruwell, an English teacher for at-risk students at a high school changed the lives of the students for good. Erin asks her students to keep diaries in book form and names it The Freedom Writers Diary. In the end, she helps numerous students to graduate and be admitted into universities.

7. Forrest Gump

Another great film in 1994 and this is the film that beat The Shawshank Redemption in Oscar Awards. However, the result is not even a controversial one because Forrest Gump is no doubt another legendary film.  The film is about the life of Forrest Gump, a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama. The film is also selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant in 2011.

8. The Pursuit of Happiness

The film is about Chris Gardner’s struggle being homeless for almost one year. We are not making a typo here — the unusual spelling comes from a mural that Chris saw on the way outside the daycare facility his son attends and he complained that “happiness” is incorrectly spelled in the film. Chris Garner himself attends the production of the movie as an associate producer and that might be one of the reasons why the movie is so real and inspiring.

9. A Beautiful Mind

The movie is a biographical one about John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics.  Early in the film, Nash develops paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while watching the burden his condition brings on his wife and friends. With the love and help from his wife and friends, Nash, in the end, wins the Nobel Award in Economics for his revolutionary work on game theory.

10. Life of Pi

If you are one of the only survivors after a shipwreck and is being left alone on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger for almost one year. This film won four Oscar Awards, including Best Director for Ang Lee. The story starts from a shipwreck which took the lives of Pi Patel’s parents and brother. After getting onto a lifeboat, Pi realized that he had to spend with a Bengal tiger all day long in the ocean. However, there is another version of the story that tiger itself is Pi and Pi had to struggle by himself on the ocean.
